Over the past few years, I have been lucky enough to have a few foreign exchange students enroll in one of my classes. 3 years ago Valeria, a young Russian student, graced my sculpture class. This year I had a young German student, Dania, for half the year in my art 1, and she was a fabulous (and missed) addition to my class.
I also am lucky to have Hidde in my Art 2: Painting/Drawing this year. He is an amazing student. He is super talented. He is in our band, and he wanted to play futbol, but some kind of UIL rules wouldn't let him. He comes from the Netherlands and had shared this video with us to help us to understand the difference between the Netherlands and Holland. He has really warmed up to us and it so much fun to have in class. |
For the last weeks of the school year, I have let the students in my art 2 have complete choice. I told them they can do whatever they want. I asked them to create at least 2 works. Well, Hidde took the freedom and ran. He has been an artist on fire. He works every day. Some days are just him playing around. He tries new things. He recently discovered an artist by the name of Tim Kerr. That inspired his self portrait, seen above. I love his exploration. His artwork is fabulous. He is trying new methods. He will call out, "someone give me an animal. Ok. Now someone pick a color." It is fun and fresh. I think he mentioned to me in passing he wished the whole year could have been like this.
He has been an asset to the class and I know we all will miss him dearly when he returns to the Netherlands. To learn more about Hidde's art, please visit his webpage, World's Best Website.
